The Site
Calthorpe Estates will regenerate an outdated commercial estate bordered by Hagley Road and Beaufort Road, which will be known as ‘New Garden Square.’
At approximately 10.7 acres, New Garden Square is located to the west of Birmingham City Centre on the northern side of Hagley Road, a major arterial route into Birmingham, and approximately 400 metres west of the Five Ways roundabout.
The current site is home to outdated commercial buildings, which are largely unoccupied, and are in need of significant modernisation. A small number of buildings, fronting onto Hagley Road, have been listed and will be retained whilst Historic England declined to list any other buildings within the site.
Birmingham City Council’s planning committee approved the proposals for the £330 million regeneration development, which will see New Garden Square regenerated to create a thriving new mixed-use destination. On 14th March 2019, Birmingham City Council gave consent following a Reserved Matters application for a 165,000 sq ft eight-storey building, forming the first phase of office development which, once completed, will provide approximately 500,000 sq ft of Grade A office space.
In order to make way for the development and help create the new public realm garden square, the mid-1970’s-built Edgbaston House was demolished and works were completed late 2018. To see the time-lapse images of the building being taken down – click here
